[FAQ]

Questions & terms

What is a credit?

Credits are the billing currency for the chemply API. A regular API lookup costs 1 credit; ongoing monitoring costs 4 credits per substance per month (3 on the Pro plan and above). The browser web search never spends credits. Each plan includes a monthly credit allowance.

Is the web search really free?

Yes. The browser web search is free and unlimited once you create an account — including on the Free plan. Without an account you can run 10 searches per day. Web search never consumes credits.

What counts as an API request?

Every lookup or resolve call to the chemply API — by name, CAS number, InChIKey, SMILES or PubChem CID — counts as one request and spends 1 credit. Heavier operations such as batch resolution can cost more.

What is ongoing monitoring?

Ongoing monitoring watches the substances on your watchlists and alerts you when their regulatory status changes — new listings, restrictions or delistings. It is available through both the API and the web interface and costs 4 credits per monitored substance per month, reduced to 3 credits on the Pro plan and above.

How many substances can I monitor?

It depends on your credit allowance, which is shared with your API usage. At 4 credits per substance per month, the Free plan's 50 credits cover about 12 substances and Starter's 1,000 about 250; at the Pro discount of 3 credits, its 5,000 credits cover roughly 1,600 — assuming no credits are spent on regular API lookups.

Do unused credits roll over?

No. Each plan's monthly credit allowance refreshes at the start of every billing month, and unused credits do not carry over to the next month.

What happens when I run out of credits?

Once your monthly allowance is used up, further API and monitoring calls are paused until your credits reset at the start of the next month or you upgrade your plan. The free web search keeps working regardless.

Can I change plans later?

Yes — you can move between Free, Starter and Pro at any time. If you need more than Pro, such as custom rate limits, an SLA or an on-premise deployment, get in touch and we will tailor a plan.
